Enjoy the panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean from the cliffs and learn about the history of this preserved 600-year-old fort.

Sagres Fortress comprises the preserved structure of a 15th-century fortress with an intriguing history. The structure, which was built to protect the Sagres harbor and town, is open for tours. Find out how the fort has survived attacks and natural disasters to remain in place over the extended time.

Consider the strategic importance of the fortress, which stands at an important point between Europe, Africa and the Americas. It was built on the orders of the affluent Prince Henry the Navigator, who was a leading figure in 15th-century Portuguese politics and the nation’s empire. It is said that Henry died inside the fortress in 1460. Learn how the fort was attacked in 1587 by Francis Drake’s English fleet, before an earthquake and tsunami almost entirely destroyed it in the 1700s.

Capture photos of the off-white façade of the fortress, which hoists a Portuguese flag. Admire the columns and pediment of the arched entrance. Inside the fort is a large wind compass that was used for marine navigation many years ago. Reach the charming Nossa Senhora da Graça chapel near the fortress.

Gaze out over the water from the vantage point of the cliffs, which are 200 feet (60 meters) high. To the northwest is a view of scenic Cape St. Vincent and its Beliche Fortress. Admire the serenity in this spacious, open clifftop area.

The fort opens to the public daily year-round from morning until evening. Winter times are a little shorter. There is an entrance fee, with discounts for kids. Plan to spend about half an hour visiting the intriguing fortress.

Sagres Fortress is on the promontory jutting out from the southern part of Sagres approaching Portugal’s southernmost point. Walk southwest from the coastal strip of Sagres for about 15 minutes to get here. See nearby sights, including Tonel Beach, Mareta Beach and the Sagres Garden.
