It's cool to get to experience an ordinary Japanese house in Kyoto, for sure. But...this one is in a location that is a bit remote. Very few places to get food nearby, not that close to a subway station, surrounded by the university rather than a livelier neighborhood. It's in the middle of the block, so you'll be walking through a narrow alley to reach it. (And the owner warns repeatedly not to talk to the neighbors, and to say you're a friend of his if questioned, so I take it this rental isn't completely kosher.) The house itself is a traditional Japanese-style house, which means empty rooms, essentially. The only furniture is a low table, and the bed is a thin futon, so you'll be spending your time on the floor. Linens could use an update. Bathroom has no sink where you can wash your hands with soap or brush your teeth -- shower and toilet rooms are separate, off the back, and cold in the morning. Not in the best condition, either... But you'll get a taste of real Japan, the ordinary, non-touristy Japan, that's for sure. That's kind of cool.
