Goethe Home and Museum Tours

Goethe House showing interior views, heritage elements and art
Visit the birthplace of Germany’s most famous wordsmith to explore the period home and learn about life in 18th-century Frankfurt.

Just a short stroll from the Main River, in the heart of Frankfurt’s Old City, you’ll find the meticulously maintained birthplace of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The house, located at 23 Grosser Hirschgraben, offers not only an insight into the life of Germany’s most revered writer but also depicts life for Frankfurt residents in the 18th century. Explore three levels of period correct rooms, complete with replica furniture and fittings. Visit an exhibition about the history of the house before making your way next door to the Goethe Museum.

Your experience with Goethe House will begin before you even step through its doors. From the outside the pastel yellow tones of the house and the elegantly pitched roof make for fantastic photographs. Enter the house to see replicas of the family furniture and to learn about the activities that took place between the walls.

Go to the music room on the first floor to see a rare upright pyramid piano. Look for the painting of the family in traditional dress hanging on the wall. See the books that may have inspired Johann Wolfgang to write in the library. Pore over more than 2,000 titles or peer through the window for a great view of the street below. On the same floor you’ll find the room in which Goethe entered the world.

Climb to the third floor to visit an exhibition outlining the history of the house. Read stories of a young Johann and his sister Cornelia. Peer through cabinets full of artifacts and documents.

Make your way next door to visit the Goethe Museum, featuring a vast collection of art from Goethe’s time. While the museum is not focused on the writer himself, the paintings offer a window into his world and will be a highlight of your visit to Goethe House.

Goethe House is located in central Frankfurt and can easily be reached on foot from many centrally located hotels and attractions. Arrive by train at Willy-Brandt-Platz, just a short walk away. The house is closed on Christmas, Good Friday and over New Year’s. An admission fee applies.
