Historic Cabin along the West Rosebud

Tucked into the foothills of the dramatic Beartooth Mountains and sitting on the banks of the West Rosebud River is an historic getaway known as the Torgrimson Place at the Bench Ranch.

Here, the Pulitzer Prize winning author Wallace Stegner escaped the hustle and bustle of everyday life to experience a retreat into the quiet, simple beauty of the natural landscape of Montana. The cabin has also been enjoyed by such notables as humorist Dave Barry and poet Allen Ginsberg. However, every guest is important, and to many of those who return year after year, the Torgrimson Place feels like home.

Big Sky Country, to see it is to believe it. Expansive vistas, wide-open prairies, rugged and spectacularly stacked mountain ranges, and trout-filled rivers grace this landscape. Like other prominent figures in American history, such as Lewis and Clark, Sitting Bull, Charlie Russell, and a score of acclaimed writers and artists, experience it with your own senses.

The Torgrimson Place is rare: this is sanctuary.

Recharge

This historical cabin and surroundings are one of the most tranquil places in the west. You are not bothered by the life stressors and can slow down to watch the birds, read with a stream running behind the cabin, fish for trout or just admire the peaceful scenery. Then at night sit by the fire and talk. Thanks for sharing your cabin with us.

Torgrimson Place on West Rosebud

We had a tremendous week at Torgrimson Place on Bench Ranch. The historic cabin is very comfortable and the ranch setting offers fishing access and beautiful views as you walk the property. Our host quickly responded to questions. We loved it!

Lovely Property

Lovely property with everything you need to enjoy your stay. Hiking, fly fishing, biking nearby. Tessa was right there whenever we needed information or a bit of help. The shaded location and creek running through the property helped keep it cool in some very hot temps. Tippet Rise Art Center is nearby and a real jewel, and you are close enough to the Beartooth Hwy to enjoy some time there.

Rosebud Retreat

The cabin is old and looks it from the outside, but the interior is well appointed with modern kitchen and bath. It's a wonderful place to stay, especially if you enjoy living on a huge ranch that is all yours, at least for a week.

Peaceful Getaway

We enjoyed our stay at Torgrimson Place! We hiked to Mystic Lake, went fishing in the back yard West Rosebud River, took a drive over the Beartooth Mountain Pass then ate lunch in Red Lodge, went trail riding at Hope Ranch, and float fished down The Stillwater River. This place was the perfect spot to come back to to rest for the next day’s adventure!

The state in this beautiful humble about will go down in history for me

What is a special cabin. I’m so glad it has historical status. I felt the energy of the writers poets, authors and others that have stayed there. It has beautiful surroundings, very quiet and peaceful.

Magical Torg

As usual, the Torg does not disappoint. We had another wonderful and magical stay. Quiet, beautiful, wondrous. We love wandering and exploring the ranch, and being close to other wild places we like to explore. We've been visiting the Torg for years and we'll most certainly be back!

Gorgeous, Peaceful, Comfortable Place

Seeing the original ax/adze marks on the cabin logs links you to history. Easy in an out to Fishtail and it's not to miss General Store, with a tasty deli and coffee nook. The cabin is comfortable, clean as a whistle with a front yard that is a beautiful place to sit and read , view the Beartooths and always be lulled by the babbling brook and a bit further, the W. Rosebud River. Will return!

Excellent

Torgrimson Place is wonderful, especially if you like history. It is a very cute old house with every modern amenity. Extremely quiet and private. Peaceful. The E Rosebud Creek running is the perfect ‘white noise’. We really enjoyed it. Property manager went out of her way to make sure all was well, even brought us fresh raspberries. Thank you

Historic cabin at the intersection of the Beartooth Mountains & W Rosebud Valley

We had such a peaceful stay at this modernized rustic cabin. The setting on the creek is outstanding, and we loved being greeted with fresh-cut wildflowers and raspberries. We cooked many nice meals, and ate outside, and read the history, including Wallace Stegner's stay. Thank you Tessa and crew.

Great spot near Tippet Rise

Had a lovely time, Very relaxing and convenient, has everything you need. Hosts were very attentive and checked in on us after our late arrival. Newly re modeled bathroom and lots of space. Lovely yard to enjoy.
