Colonia del Sacramento Plaza de Armas

Colonia del Sacramento Plaza de Armas featuring street scenes and heritage architecture
Take a relaxing stroll through the trees and cobblestone streets of the plaza that lays claim to one of the oldest churches in Uruguay.

The Colonia del Sacramento Plaza de Armas is a square in the historic center of the city, surrounded by many of the main landmarks. Its most famous feature is the Matriz Church, one of the oldest in Uruguay. The plaza is decorated with trees, benches and a well-kept lawn, perfect for a brief pause from sightseeing. Take advantage of this ideal spot for a picnic in sight of the majestic church.

Marvel at the very old Matriz Church. Admire the white twin towers that protrude above the surrounding buildings. Look around the interior of the church, which is ornate with elegant arches and columns. The original structure dates back to 1680 although it was heavily reconstructed several times in the 19th century.

The center of the plaza is a perfect refuge for a relaxing break. Enjoy a picnic with friends and family on a bench or a patch of grass. Or eat at one of the many cafés and restaurants in the area. Find an eclectic range of dining options as you stroll through the charming streets around the plaza. Sit at one of the tables that spill out from the restaurants onto the square. Most of the roads that encircle the square are cobblestoned, which adds to the antique charm of the city.

The square is also known among locals as the Manuel Lobo Plaza, after a 16th-century Portuguese colonist who founded the city.

The Colonia del Sacramento Plaza de Armas sits two blocks north of the other principal historic center, Plaza Mayor. The entire historic center resides in the city’s southwest, on the Río de la Plata that separates Uruguay from Buenos Aires in Argentina. The square is less than 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) northwest from the main bus stop and ferry terminal. You’ll find many hotels, cafés and historic landmarks in the area.
