Stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Andes Mountains, Chubut is one of Argentina’s most fascinating provinces. Discover an assortment of indigenous wildlife and explore three impressive national parks.
Back in the 19th century, a group of Welsh immigrants settled in Chubut and, despite their quick assimilation into Argentine culture, forever placed their own mark on the landscape and customs of the province. Welsh chapels are dotted around the countryside and a number of language teachers still offer Welsh classes to local children. Time your visit to coincide with the annual Eisteddfod festival, which celebrates Welsh language, music and dance.
Ride La Trochita, a narrow gauge steam railway that runs between Chubut and Rio Negro. The train route was made famous by the author Paul Theroux in his book The Old Patagonian Express.
Visit the town of Trelew, whose Welsh name means “the village of Lewis” in honour of its founder. Wander around the Museo Paleontológico Egidio Feruglio, a natural history museum that documents the most important dinosaur fossil finds in Patagonia.
Enjoy a wealth of outdoor activities such as rafting in the Corcovado River, rappelling in the picturesque Villa Dique Florentino Ameghino and scuba diving in Puerto Madryn, a coastal city that is often considered to be the diving capital of Argentina. Ski down the slopes of La Hoya, a resort that gets plenty of powdery snow over its long ski season.
Go whale watching in the Valdes Peninsula and look for other marine life such as seals, sea lions and dolphins. Hike through the Petrified Forest of Sarmiento, with its lunar desert-like landscape and strange red rocks.
Fly into one of Chubut’s four main airports located in Trelew, José de San Martín, Esquel and Puerto Madryn. Ride the buses around the city centers, or rent a car to explore the natural attractions along the coast. Visit during June to December if you plan to go whale watching, or during December to March for the peak summer season.
Rugged and beautiful, Chubut is crammed with exciting adventures and fascinating wildlife.
I researched hotels in Puerto Madryn before our trip and none of them came across as super special or memorable, and ended up choosing the Hotel Territorio and am so glad we did! The hotel is located a little off the main strip (5 minute drive to downtown) right in front of the beach. The hotel was ...
We liked The Dazzler. The best part was the location -- assuming you obtain an Ocean View. The room was very big - we liked it. Clean. Staff was fine - efficient. Breakfast was not much - kind of a Hampton Inn breakfast. We parked in the garage -- which was tiny, but a great rate. The location was ...
The hotel is very nice, but the room and bathroom were very small. Not at all what I expected. The personal was attentive and nice in general. Location is nice.
Smelling corridors, no hot water, no cleaning services in the room. Decent breakfast. Good restaurant. Convenient location in downtown.
