Kyoto and all of Japan is spotlessly clean. We were out early one morning and found crews actually hosing down and scrubbing the sidewalk with a buffer. Kyoto is a beautiful city with a mix of old, very old, and new. We would like to have stayed there longer. There could be one big confusion. The UNESCO site called the Golden Temple is famous and worth seeing. It's name is Kinkakuji. There is another temple that is nice but not as impressive and its name is Ginkakuji. There are buses to each one just make sure you're on the right bus.
Kyoto can be summed up in one word: sublime. Nothing can surpass the beauty of its Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, and their gardens. Having been to Kyoto many times in the past, I still say that it's possible to discover new and interesting places every time. Also, its proximity to Nara and Uji make it easy to see those cities on day trips.
