Take the tram ride. No need to wait a half an hour in line to see the nocturnal animals on stage.

The tram ride had a narrative that was constant and somewhat over the top. Hiking through the zoo at night, however, was really different and memorable. Night Safari does a good job setting up lighting and feeding so that you see lots of animals.
