I normally don’t write reviews regardless of any experiences but this one gotta be the most unorthodox hotel. Prison themes with prison wifi. Only picked this because I had unpleasant experience with nearby Airbnb and papa whale just happens to be near it. 4 stars hotel my ass. I’m not expecting any 5 star treatments nor red carpets but this is WAY below standard 3 stars. Only good part about this prison is the location; Ximending. This hotel is a huge tourist trap. Mobile reception was bad because most of the rooms were in the basement, and their wifi was slow and not working all the time Some of the lights in the room were not working Housekeeping forgot to clean my room on 1 of the 4 days

Great Place
Very hip place in a busy part of time. This is a a great place for tourist, and close to transportation They even gave me a FREE late checkout :) it is in the main Taipei city center and walkable to EVERYTHING. The room is super small, that is the only negative.

Hotel Papa’s location and interior design has an interesting appearance. Especially for travelers who would like to relax and enjoy the classical culture while staying in Taiwan.

Very good location. We got a non-smoking room but we kept smelling cigarette smoke in the toilet area, which may be coming from the exhaust fan. Breakfast is not so good, not much international menu offered. Service (Reception) is very good, our needs are all attended to.

Horrible experience, had to leave early and book another hotel. Felt like we were in jail with the lighting, corridors and no window. Front desk did not care or even bother to help. Only redeeming quality was the kind luggage/door help man and the cleaning ladies. Would not recommend stay, run.

YK- Hotel Papa Whale Stay
Opted and paid for 3 ppl stay and the room was rather clamped. Bathing area was small too, particularly the wash basin (although separated from bath area) when washing our face, blocked by the taps and glass panel, very inconvenient. Breakfast was not to our satisfaction- red bean soup not hot. Same food menu everyday, not much variety.

I asked for a quiet room but ended up with room next to the some machine service room that made a of noise at night and early morning that made sleeping terrible. Also i paid more for my room than my friends on the same floor and got no breakfast while my friends did.

Everything is great. The staff is approachable and able to assist request quickly. The only issue I had is my room lock and cannot open properly with the key card. I have to tap the card after several attempts before the door can be open. I reflect the issue to the staff but since I’m checking out the next day, so the issues couldn’t be fix until the next day.

It was a nice decent hotel for a reasonable price. I had their breakfast buffet. It was okay, nothing special but it was acceptable to me. Cleaning lady was very nice. Overall, I liked it and will stay with papa whale hotel again in the future.

Very disappointing breakfast . stay for 5 days everyday not only cheap and same food but the food served was far below a normal hotel standard . 30% was cold appetiser . pre covid this hotel served steamboat buffet was far beyond expectation . Room basically never vacuum . Full of thick dusts on all the metal railing , lamp light etc . when u on the light you can see all the dust flying in the air .

I love this hotel very much. Walkable distance from airport expreas station, Beimen station and Ximen station. Morning buffet was amazing. I stayed 3 nights and they served same meal but it was ok. I wish they add more vegetable on ths salad. I stayed in the smallest room but good size to open my suitecase and hung clothing. There are two shower heads in bathroom and rain forest shower was so pleasant. Washing machine with vending machine was helpful too. Strage service after check out is useful.

Cigarette smoke smell in the room
2 our of the 5 nights there was heavy smell of smoke. Complained to front desk but they did not do anything. Just sprayed room airfreshener which did not resolve the issue.

Overall good stay. Good points: 1) reception staff Howard and Chris were exceptionally good. 2) rooms good size 3) good ice cream shop 4) close to airport MRT Down points: 1) walls a bit thin and can hear noisy neighbours ( plenty of them ) 2) ppl congregate and talk loudly in corridors outside room at 0800 onwards in morning Summary: I used to stay at another hotel chain but now I will definitely strongly consider this next time I stay in TPE .

the check in was very unfriendly. I had to wait until exactly 3 pm to check in and then there was a rush of all the people waiting. Also, there is no room service despite the fact that it says there is room service on the website. My room had no window and felt very claustrophobic

Pretty central and walkable to Ximenting - with options of food and shopping. Like the decor and the vibe in the common areas - the theme of seamenship is pretty cool. But functionally in the room, definitely room for improvement. The bathroom and shower area are too small (well, the rain shower is shorter than me... I need to duck to get under it). TV is good with many channels and big. Check in and check out... I don't mind the self-service. Let us know we need the booking # in advance. Many of us just hand over our passport and get checked in when there is a front desk. Last, the Expedia VIP program late checkout was well appreciated!!
