"Staying at this place gives more of a farm stay or couchsurfing feel than a guesthouse, as they only seem to have one or a few rooms. The owners take good care of their guests and are very friendly, even though they speak close to no English. The food is delicious! There are multiple dogs and cats living on the property. The house is very old and the temperature inside is almost the same as outside. Beware, there is no heating in the guestrooms nor toilets and temperatures can easily fall down...

"We loved our stay at Pumping Surf. The hosts were incredibly kind and picked us up from the train and took us out to a local spot for udon. We were easily able to rent a surfboard and walk to the beach. Being able to use the bicycles was also a huge plus so that we could get into town to buy groceries and have lunch. I would definitely recommend staying! "

"Amazing service and great facilities. We were lucky to be the only two in the house so it might get a little squishy when its full. Works great as a platform on the way to Takachiho Gorge from the Usuki ferry at night."

"Pros: Good value. Spacious rooms. Relatively large beds. Quiet area. Easy, ample parking. Hotel connected to a convenience store. Good free breakfast. Walking distance to Amaterasu train attraction. Cons: A bit further away from Takachiho Gorge, about 5min drive. No view from hotel. Laundry was a bit expensive, had to buy detergent from the front desk separately from the laundry machine fee. "

"Was looking for a stopover for one night and stayed in Yurakuan. The property looks old but it was well maintained. Everything is clean albeit old. The only downside is we book a room for 5 pax which has 2 twin beds and a room for 3 futons. But we can only fit 2 futons as the big table took up space and there’s no where else to place it. So my youngest gal squeeze with me on the bed instead. Other than that, the stay was comfortable "

"I highly recommend this ryokan if you are visiting Mt Aso. We stayed at the two storied migi room with a private outdoor tub and an indoor jacuzzi. The space was immaculate and spacious. You must book the half board rate that includes the most sumptuous breakfast and dinner you will find anywhere. You will need to take a bus/train to reach the main Aso area but that we no issue for us. Every staff we met extended the highest hospitality we ever experienced. "

"The entrance of the hotel might be a little difficult to people who drive to there because the entrance lane is really narrow and small. If you drive there, do not arrive before sunset or it's totally dark during the lane. Guest rooms are pet friendly therefore it might remain some smells of pets (for people who dislike animals), you should consider it carefully or you might be uncomfortable all the night even though it smells not too strong. "We stayed for 10 days and it was conveniently located and very clean. I wished they had air condition in the common aisle area as the weather can get very hot (the room, kitchen area had good air conditioning). Also we had guest complaining about any noises as you really had to open/close door quietly etc...and some guests the very last day was very noisy until 3am in the morning while the door of the rooms, youi could hear everything. We got extra towels etc as we requested it, but they should...

"Me and my friend had an amazing stay at Sea Dweller! The host was super nice and helped drive us to and from the beach and train station, even though it is easily walkable. He also recommended some great dining options. Would definitely come back!"
